DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital and Duke Raleigh Hospital have again earned top scores for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit organization run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

The “A” scores for Leapfrog’s spring 2021 survey are part of the group’s Hospital Safety Grades, issued to hospitals every six months. Duke Health’s three hospitals were among more than 2,700 hospitals surveyed nationwide.

“Patient safety is our top priority, and the ‘A’ grades from Leapfrog are an endorsement of our daily focus on respect for people and continuous improvement to ensure that patients receive the highest level of care at all three of our hospitals,” said Richard Shannon, M.D., chief quality officer for Duke Health. “We are proud of the work that our teams undertake daily to uphold and advance patient safety, and we are grateful that their efforts are recognized.”

The Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Score grades hospitals on a scale of “A” to “F” based on their overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. The organization states that an expert panel selected 27 measures of patient safety, analyzed the data and determined the weight of each measure based on evidence, opportunity for improvement and impact.
