Durham, N.C. -- Duke Medicine Chief Medical Information Officer Jeffrey Ferranti, M.D., has been appointed the organization's Chief Information Officer and Vice President for Medical Informatics.

The announcement was made by Victor J. Dzau, M.D., Duke University chancellor for health affairs and CEO of Duke University Health System. Ferranti assumed his new role on June 1, 2013.

"Jeff is an innovative and forward thinking physician executive with demonstrated experience planning, developing and implementing integrated IT solutions in support of clinical excellence, operational effectiveness, and novel research," said Dzau. "As a practicing clinician, IT leader and researcher, he brings a unique perspective to this role that will allow Duke Medicine to excel in the data driven health system of the future."

Ferranti is currently overseeing Duke’s massive electronic health record implementation. Over 170 Duke Medicine clinics are currently live on the new system, with Duke University Hospital and the balance of the organization's ambulatory clinics preparing to go live on June 22, 2013

Prior to his current responsibilities, Ferranti served as Associate Chief Information Officer for Duke University Health System. He was also the Associate Director of the Duke Center for Health Informatics (DCHI), a multidisciplinary institute dedicated to training the next generation of health informaticians.

An active clinician and researcher, Ferranti is a faculty neonatologist at both Duke University Hospital and Duke Regional Hospital, and served as the principal investigator on several federally funded research projects.
