DURHAM, N.C. -- Robert Gutman, M.D., a physician with Durham Nephrology Associates, P.A., has been appointed Chief Medical Officer of Durham Regional Hospital.

In this position, Gutman will provide leadership and bring the practitioner's vantage point in promoting patient care excellence in partnership with the hospital's senior leadership team, said Richard Liekweg, chief executive officer of Durham Regional Hospital. Additionally, Gutman will collaborate with elected medical staff leadership and actively promote partnerships among DRH, the medical staff and Duke University Health System.

Gutman has been a member of the Durham Regional Hospital medical staff for 18 years and has served in numerous capacities, including president of the medical staff from 1996 to 1997 and chairman of the Performance Improvement Committee and the Durham Regional Hospital House Staff Committee from 1999 to the present. He is a consulting professor with the Duke University Medical Center department of medicine and serves on the Professionalism Subcommittee on Curriculum Reform for Duke University School of Medicine. He currently serves on the Board of the National Renal Physicians Association.

Gutman earned his medical degree from University of Florida in 1962 and completed his residency training at the University of Washington.
