Duke Urgent Care clinics across the Triangle have seen a noticeable uptick in people seeking treatment for animal bites, with more than 1,000 cases in the past year.

Dogs and cats are the most common culprits. While rabies remains rare, the challenge is distinguishing bites from potentially rabid animals versus insect bites or other exposures.

Duke Urgent Care medical directors Benjamin Cook, PA-C, and Kimberly Caulway, M.D., explain the steps to take if you’re bitten by an animal and where to go for the rabies vaccine series.
