DURHAM, N.C. -- Beginning Monday, July 26, parking space on the top three levels of the garage directly across from Duke Hospital (Parking Garage II) will be reduced by half while structural maintenance and testing is done.

During a routine inspection of the garage, some small cracks were discovered that engineering and maintenance teams will inspect, officials said. As a precautionary measure, officials are halving the potential weight load on those parking levels.

The levels involved -- levels 6, 7 and 8 - are used for employee parking. The top three levels were built onto the original structure about 12 years ago. Levels 1-5 of the parking garage are not being tested.

Approximately 500 parking spaces will be taken out of service.

Flyers announcing the reduction of employee parking spaces were placed on employee cars Friday afternoon. Additional flyers were posted at the garage entrances. Employees unable to park in their normal garage will be provided space about two blocks away in Parking Garage III on Pratt Street, which adjoins the Duke North Pavilion. Shuttle buses are available to transport employees from that garage to the entrance of Duke Hospital or to Duke Clinic.
