Dr. Thomas P. Vail, 39, joined the faculty of Duke University Medical Center in 1992 as assistant professor of surgery in the division of orthopedic surgery. He was promoted to associate professor in 1998.

Vail also is the medical director of the Orthopedic Private Diagnostic Clinic and is on the graduate faculty in the Duke's School of Engineering. In addition, he serves as a consulting surgeon at the Durham VAMC, the Asheville VAMC, Carteret County Health Department and Sampson County Health Department.

After graduating from the Duke School of Engineering cum laude with a degree in mechanical engineering and materials science in 1981, he attended the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University, Chicago, where he earned a medical degree in 1985.
