DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke Children's Hospital & Health
Center's Teddy Bear Ball will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec.
6, at the Durham Marriott at the Civic Center. All proceeds
from the event will benefit pediatric programs at Duke
Children's Hospital & Health Center.
The 13th annual ball has raised more than $1.6 million for
pediatric programs at Duke. Teddy bears will be paired with
more than 300 items -- ranging from framed artwork by children
to a Steuben "Deep Flower Bowl" -- and auctioned to the highest
bidders. Some featured auction items include a package to
attend the 45th annual Grammy Awards in New York; a Duke vs.
Maryland basketball package; a cruise to Alaska; a ski trip to
Vail, Colo.; a trip to a spa in Sonoma, Calif.; and a chance to
be an honorary crew member for Jeff Burton at a NASCAR race in
Daytona. Last year's ball raised more than $298,000 for Duke
Children's Hospital & Health Center.
The final auction item of the evening will be "Under the
Sea," a hand-made quilt that weaves together panels of nautical
scenes drawn by youngsters hospitalized at Duke. Duke
Children's Hospital & Health Center is one of the largest
children's charities in the Southeast, providing more than $49
million in unreimbursed charity medical care each year.
