Duke University Hospital Recognized As National Leader in Quality of Care

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University Hospital has received the 2017 Vizient Rising Star Award, recognizing significant improvements in its year-over-year rankings in the Vizient annual Quality and Accountability Study.

“Our highest aspiration is to provide the best patient care, and this award recognizes the commitment from everyone at Duke University Hospital to achieve that goal for our patients,” said Kevin Sowers, president of Duke University Hospital. 

Vizient -- a health care services company that represents acute care health systems and most of the nation’s academic medical centers -- developed its Quality and Accountability Study to help health care organizations identify practices associated with high performance in patient care quality and safety. 

The program measures performance based on the Institute of Medicine’s six domains of care: safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and patient centeredness. Composite scoring also uses patient-level performance data from a variety of sources, including the Vizient Clinical Data Base, the Vizient Core Measures Data Base, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network. 

As a Rising Star, Duke University Hospital demonstrated best practices to achieve top-quartile performance and accountability.

“I’m proud of all of the work that our faculty and staff have undertaken to place in the highest quartile of performance measured by Vizient,” Sowers said. “This award reflects the goals and values that are paramount to our mission.”
