Rukmini Balu, PhD, MBA
Rukmini Balu is Chief of Staff to Chancellor Eugene Washington. In this role, she advises and supports the chancellor on a variety of projects and opportunities. In addition to ensuring operational efficiency in the Chancellor's Office and coordinating office communications, her role includes advancing key priorities such as strategic planning, management of high performance leadership teams, models of governance for high-functioning academic health systems and the stronger integration of health-related programs at Duke, as well as associated programs in local, regional and global communities.
Prior to joining the Chancellor’s Office, Rukmini was director, strategy and partnership development for Duke Medicine Global, where she was responsible for strategic planning, coordinating and monitoring the implementation of global activities. Her responsibilities also included business development, coordination of global initiatives in health care consulting, clinical research implementation and the development of training programs related to clinical research and health care leadership.
Rukmini has over 18 years of health care experience combining pharmaceutical strategy, R&D planning, life sciences investment and global healthcare delivery advisory services. As adjunct associate professor at the Duke Global Health Institute, Rukmini instructs students in the basics of global health in China (Peking University and Duke Kunshan University).
Rukmini earned a PhD in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. She also holds BS (zoology) and MS degrees (life sciences) from India.
