DURHAM, N.C. -- Michael D. Israel, who has served as chief operating officer of Duke University Hospital for almost three years, is expected to be named vice chancellor for health affairs and chief executive officer of Duke Hospital.

Israel's appointment will be recommended to the Duke University Board of Trustees's executive committee on June 14 by Dr. Ralph Snyderman, chancellor for health affairs and CEO of Duke University Medical Center & Health System.

Israel will replace Dr. Mark Rogers, who recently accepted a senior position at Perkin-Elmer Corp.

"Mike has a proven track record as an outstanding hospital administrator and leader here and at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston," Snyderman said. "Indeed, since his arrival as COO, Mike has led major hospital and hospital-related initiatives which have allowed us to be more supportive of the needs of our patients, physicians and staff, as well as to be more competitive in a market-driven health care environment. Mike has a great deal of know-how and the enthusiastic support of medical center and university leadership. I look forward to working with him closely in his new capacity."

Israel came to Duke in September 1993 after more than six years at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston, a 949-bed non-profit tertiary care hospital affiliated with both the Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas School of Medicine, Houston.

"Since coming to Duke, I have been committed to maintaining the high level of quality patient care for which Duke is internationally known," Israel said. "In the current climate of health care delivery, it is vital that large research and teaching institutions such as Duke develop innovative strategies to become more efficient and cost-effective.

"The hospital and the medical center have made bold decisions under Dr. Snyderman's leadership that should enable Duke to maintain its well-earned reputation into the next century," he continued. "In my new position, I hope to help continue Duke's evolution into the model academic hospital and health system of the future."

As COO, Israel was responsible for running the day-to-day operations of Duke University Hospital. In his new position, he will continue to be responsible for overall hospital operations, as well as other hospital-related businesses.

Before joining St. Luke's, Israel served in executive capacities at Shadyside Health, Education and Research Corp., Pittsburgh; Bayshore Community Health Services, Inc., Holmdel, NJ; and Intercare Health Services, Edison, NJ.
